Minister of State Maria Böhmer welcomed Mohamed Amine Sbihi, the Moroccan Minister of Culture, for discussions at the Federal Foreign Office today (11 February). Their talks focused on expanding bilateral relations in the sphere of culture and education.
Within the framework of the transformation partnership with Morocco the Federal Foreign Office spent over a million euros in 2012/2013 to support cultural projects.
Through its cultural preservation programme the Federal Foreign Office also supports efforts by the Moroccan Government to preserve the Jewish heritage in the country and to give the broad public access to it. In this context Minister of State Böhmer assured the Moroccan Minister of Culture of German support for the preservation of the Essaouira synagogue. In 2014 a first tranche of 100,000 euros will be made available.
During the discussion the Minister of State particularly stressed the importance of cooperation in the field of education. According to her, promoting interest in the German language was an essential basis for increased exchange between schools and universities.
During his visit to Berlin, Minister of Culture Sbihi will participate in a panel discussion in the Pergamon Museum tomorrow (12 February).
