On 23 June 2014, Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth met the Foreign Minister of Montenegro, Igor Lukšić, at the Federal Foreign Office.
Their talks focused on Montenegro’s role in a shared Europe and the country’s efforts to move closer to the EU. The Minister of State stressed:
Montenegro plays a central role in stabilising the still difficult situation in the Western Balkans. Together, we represent a Europe committed above all to common values.
The Minister of State for Europe highlighted the progress Montenegro has made in the accession negotiations with the EU and in moving closer to NATO: “Montenegro’s efforts to make rapid progress are tangible,” he said. At the same time, Roth also warned of the need to undertake further reform efforts in strengthening the rule of law and stepping up the fight against corruption and organised crime.
