On 13 February, Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth visited the new Government in Athens, the first member of the German Cabinet to do so. During the meeting with his counterpart, Nikos Chountis, Roth advocated establishing a dialogue to foster trust.
After the talks, Roth stated that it had been important to him to travel to Greece shortly after the parliamentary elections to get to know his new colleague. Roth continued:
I have come here to listen to what the new Government has to say and to hear about its proposals. What is more, we want to offer our support, for example when it comes to establishing a fair tax system and modern administrative structures.
Roth said that he had also made it clear that the EU had long since changed course:
Growth, employment and the strengthening of social cohesion are our political priorities. I am looking forward to cooperating with Greece and would like us to maintain our good partnership. We are only strong if we join forces.
