Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth visited the newly opened reception centre for refugees in the 18th arrondissement of Paris on 14 November. He met German correspondents in Paris and discussed current bilateral and European policy issues with French Minister of State for European Affairs Harlem Désir. Roth had been invited by his French counterpart Désir to attend a meeting of the social democratic Ministers for Europe.
“We can be an encouraging role model for others in Europe.”
Minister of State Roth said that he was impressed by the work that the many volunteers were doing at the recently opened reception centre for refugees in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. The centre is currently taking in up to 400 men travelling alone before they are distributed to centres throughout the country.
The Deputy Mayor of Paris Dominique Versini told the Minister of State about her trips to Germany to find out about the approach adopted there. She said that much of what she had seen in Germany was now also being implemented in Paris. Minister of State Roth: “Coping with the refugee crisis remains a major task for our two countries. We can learn from each other and can be an encouraging role model for others in Europe.”
Minister of State Roth discussed Franco-German relations and current challenges facing Europe at his talks with German correspondents.
Prior to the meeting of the social democratic Ministers for Europe, Roth held intensive discussions with his counterpart, Minister of State Harlem Désir, on current European issues and transatlantic relations. Bilateral topics such as the decision by the Franco-German Council of Ministers to establish a Franco-German societal integration council were also on the agenda.
