The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights assists the member states of the Council of Europe in rectifying shortcomings in their national systems of human rights protection.

In order to do so he visits the countries and publishes reports. Moreover, he promotes awareness of and respect for human rights, provides advice and guidance on human rights protection and supports the work of national ombudspersons.

The Commissioner for Human Rights remains in office for a period of six years. Nils Muižnieks (Latvia) has been the Commissioner for Human Rights since April 2012. He visited Germany most recently in May 2015 as part of an official week-long country visit.
