The Commissioner for Human Rights assists the member states of the Council of Europe.

The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights works as an independent body to protect human rights in the member States, particularly with regard to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). She publishes public opinions in this field and reports to the Committee of Ministers and the Parliamentary Assembly.
The Commissioner for Human Rights is elected every six years. The Bosnian Dunja Mijatović was appointed to the post in 2018.
