The 24th EU‑Gulf Cooperation Council ministerial meeting, which took place in Doha on 24 May, focused on the regional trouble spots of Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Libya.
In his address Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth reconfirmed Germany’s engagement within the framework of the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL.
He assured Syria’s neighbours of Germany’s continued solidarity:
Germany will not abandon the countries which have taken in millions of refugees. We want to do our part to ensure that people throughout the region can live in peace and freedom and that human rights are fully respected.
In a joint statement by the co‑chairs – High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini representing the EU and Qatar’s Foreign Minister Khalid bin Mohammed Al‑Attiyah representing the Gulf Cooperation Council – both sides underscored the strategic significance of their cooperation in overcoming regional and international conflicts as well as global challenges such as the fight against terrorism.
