The Directorate‑General S was set up in March 2015 as a result of the process Review 2014 – A Fresh Look at German Foreign Policy.

The Directorate‑General S was set up in March 2015 as a result of the process Review 2014 – A Fresh Look at German Foreign Policy. It is responsible for the fields of humanitarian assistance, crisis prevention, stabilisation and peacebuilding.

Leadership of the Directorate‑General

The Directorate-General is headed by Rüdiger König. In addition to him, the leadership comprises a Director for Humanitarian Assistance and Directorate-General S Budget Planning, as well as a Director for Civilian Crisis Prevention and Stabilisation.

Fields of work

The following fields of work fall under the Directorate-General’s remit:

- Policy issues
- Budget planning and personnel
- Crisis prevention, stabilisation, post-conflict peacebuilding
- Early crisis detection
- Forward-looking strategy, conflict analysis, Center for International Peace Operations (ZIF), evaluation
- Humanitarian assistance
