Statement by the Federal Foreign Office on the attack on the convoy of the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority

13.03.2018 - Press release

A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (13 March) on the attack on the convoy of Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah:

The German Government condemns today’s attack on Prime Minister Hamdallah’s convoy in the Gaza Strip in the strongest possible terms. We wish all those injured a rapid recovery.

We encourage Prime Minister Hamdallah to continue his endeavours to bring about a Palestinian reconciliation process. Lasting progress, including for the people in Gaza, can only be achieved through dialogue and compromise. Violence must not be allowed to serve as a means of conducting politics.

It is important that the circumstances of the attack be established and those responsible held to account.

Background information:

An explosive device detonated shortly after Prime Minister Hamdallah’s convoy entered the Gaza Strip today. Several people were injured in the attack. Hamdallah was visiting the Gaza Strip to attend the inauguration of a water treatment plant in northern Gaza.
