Green Climate Fund in Bonn – German diplomacy in action

A phone call to a glacier, an International Airport for Birds, a balloon trip without a happy end…?

From 16 July to 16 August eight artists from Europe, Latin America and Africa will present their particular take on the challenges of climate change and its consequences. The works on show are by Mathias Braschler and Monika Fischer (Switzerland), Simon Faithfull (Britain), René Francisco (Cuba), Wolfgang Aichner and Thomas Huber (Germany), Kalle Laar (Germany), Misheck Masamvu (Zimbabwe), Rúrí (Iceland), Res Ingold (Switzerland) and Stephan Andreae (Germany). The artworks are complemented by displays on the Green Climate Fund and Germany’s candidacy to host the Fund’s headquarters.

The travelling exhibition is being shown in Berlin for the first time. Designed in connection with Germany’s bid to host the Green Climate Fund, the exhibition highlights the importance of preventive climate diplomacy and the role of Bonn as a UN location.

Germany has offered Bonn, where a number of UN bodies are already based, as the headquarters of the Green Climate Fund. This new Fund was launched by the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in December 2011 in Durban. The plans are for up to US$ 100 billion a year to be made available for measures in developing countries and emerging economies aimed at promoting adaptation to climate change and reducing emissions. A large part of this money is to be managed by the up to 300 staff of the Green Climate Fund. Where the Fund will be based is likely to be decided in November.

The exhibition will be open from 16 July to 16 August on weekdays from 10.00 to 18.00 h in the Atrium of the Federal Foreign Office.
