Minister of State Pieper opens Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico

Cornelia Pieper, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, will be travelling to Mexico on Saturday (26 November) in order to open the 25th International Book Fair in Guadalajara.

Germany is this year’s Guest of Honour and will be presenting a comprehensive literary and cultural programme in the German pavilion. The pavilion is co-sponsored by the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, the programme is presented in cooperation with the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Goethe-Institut. By taking part in a panel discussion with Nobel Prize winners Herta Müller and Mario Vargas Llosa, Minister of State Pieper will also open the Book Fair’s comprehensive literary programme.

On the occasion of her upcoming trip, Minister of State Pieper issued the following statement in Berlin today (24 November):

“The choice of Germany as Guest of Honour in Guadalajara is a key moment not only for German-Mexican cultural relations, but also for the whole hispanophone world. It shows how literature can build bridges between people even across continental divides.”

The Guadalajara International Book Fair is the most important publishing gathering in the Spanish-speaking world.

During her stay, Minister of State Piper will also visit the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City. Restoration of numerous works displayed in the museum was funded by the Cultural Preservation Programme of the Federal Foreign Office to the tune of 61,000 euro. In 2010, an internationally acclaimed retrospective of the painter, who is of German descent, took place in Berlin.
