Germany and Tunisia agree to cooperate on building up democracy in Tunisia

13.09.2011 - Press release

Germany will continue to support the transformation process in Tunisia. This intention was sealed with a joint declaration signed by representatives of the two states in Tunis this afternoon.

On 4 July 2011 in Berlin, Foreign Minister Westerwelle and his Tunisian counterpart Mohamed Mouldi Kefi reached agreement on a German-Tunisian dialogue on transformation.

In the declaration Germany and Tunisia agreed among other things to launch projects relating to the training of Tunisian officials, the strengthening of the rule of law and decentralization. Moreover, an “employment pact for Tunisia” is to be drawn up and close cooperation is envisaged in the areas of education and research. This includes additional scholarships for young Tunisians.

This year already, the German Government has made available to the region additional funds amounting to more than 35 million euro for democratization, employment and financial support for small and medium-sized companies. The German Cabinet has decided to support the transformation processes in North Africa with a total of 100 million euro in the period from 2012 to 2013.
