Hungarian media legislation does not bode well for the upcoming EU Presidency

23.12.2010 - Press release

Werner Hoyer, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, issued the following statement in Berlin today (23 December) on the new media legislation in Hungary:

“The new Hungarian media legislation does not bode well for Hungary’s upcoming EU Presidency. If there is even the slightest suspicion that freedom of the media is being undermined in any European Union member state by a move to control the content of media output, then there are grounds for serious concern. As the next EU Presidency, Hungary has a special responsibility to represent Europe’s values and interests in the world.
The German Government welcomes the European Commission’s decision as “guardian of the Treaties” to examine whether the media laws passed in Hungary meet the standards enshrined in the Treaty of Lisbon. At any rate, they are not in keeping with the spirit of a Union built on unity in diversity.”
