Federal Minister Steinmeier pledges assistance following attacks in Baghdad

27.08.2009 - Press release

Several government buildings, including the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, were hit by the devastating series of attacks in Baghdad last Wednesday (19 August). Thirty-two Foreign Ministry officials were killed and over sixty injured, some of them severely, and the building itself was badly damaged. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier had condemned the attacks in the strongest terms and sent his opposite number Hoshyar Zebari a message expressing his profound sympathy.

The German Government is now assisting the Iraqi Government in dealing with the humanitarian consequences of the attacks. With Federal Foreign Office funding, a number of severely injured Iraqi Foreign Ministry officials are shortly to be flown to Germany for hospital treatment.

In the concerted series of attacks on 19 August 2009 at least 95 people were killed and over 1200 injured.
