After lengthy negotiations mediated by South African President Thabo Mbeki, President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai reached a power-sharing agreement for the future.
Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier commented today (12 September) in Berlin:
"I welcome the agreement between the two parties in Zimbabwe. I hope it will pave the way towards a peaceful future. What matters now is to resolutely tackle the country's problems. Zimbabwe urgently needs a fresh start in both political and economic terms!
We will judge the new government by its deeds. I hope that a framework is created soon which safeguards democratic freedoms and enables economic development."
