Minister of State Link holds talks in New York and Canada

Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Michael Georg Link has visited New York. His agenda included high-level talks at the United Nations (UN) with Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson and Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Hervé Ladsous, among others.

The talks centred on the current crises in Mali and Syria as well as on global sustainability goals. Minister of State Link is Germany’s representative on a working group charged with defining these sustainability goals. Whilst in New York, he also had the opportunity to visit the Leo Baeck Institute, a documentary and research centre dedicated to the culture and history of German-speaking Jewry.

Minister of State Link then travelled to Canada, where the focus is on German-Canadian economic relations and on the negotiations on a free trade agreement between the EU and Canada. Minister of State Link held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird and Deputy Associate Minister Boehm, a former Canadian Ambassador in Berlin.

In a series of public speeches, Minister of State Link focused on how to overcome the financial crisis in the euro area. At Carleton University in Ottawa, Link said that Europe was tackling the root causes of the recent crisis of trust in the EU. On the subject of transatlantic relations, he spoke of the negotiations between the EU and Canada on a comprehensive free trade agreement (CETA) and of the project of a transatlantic free-trade zone between the EU and the United States. He said that only by pooling their strengths could the partners on both sides of the Atlantic defend their values and interests in a globalized world.

The North American trip of the Minister of State ended in Québec.
