Minister of State Pieper: Weimar Triangle good basis for an “Élysée Treaty of the 21st century”
- date of issue
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty between Germany and France, Cornelia Pieper, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office and Coordinator of German‑Polish Intersocietal and Cross‑Border Cooperation, today (22 January) issued the following statement:
We should use the success of the Franco‑German Treaty to make further headway now on European integration. Besides reconciliation with France, reconciliation with Poland and the success of EU eastern enlargement remain the foundation of Germany’s policy for Europe.
Trilateral cooperation with Poland in the Weimar Triangle format could thus be a good basis for an “Élysée Treaty of the 21st century”. Germany, France and Poland should use this anniversary year to make further headway on cultural cooperation. Culture is the humus in which free societies thrive and flourish. That goes particularly of course for the young generation. So we should make it our goal to expand trilateral youth exchanges also in France and Poland.
