Foreign Minister Steinmeier: León Plan for Libya could pave the way for a fresh political start
Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement today (4 May) in Cairo, whilst on a visit to Egypt:
If calm is to be restored in Libya, the country’s political camps must finally work together in a constructive spirit. UN Special Representative Bernardino León has spent weeks shuttling between the parties to the conflict and carefully sounding out their willingness to compromise. He has now presented a proposal for a new political order, which contains sensible agreements on the contested issues and which could pave the way for a fresh political start.
A chance like this will surely not come again soon. Both sides would be well advised to accept the helping hand proffered by the international community.
