On 28 October Ukrainians went to the polls to elect a new parliament. According to OSCE election observers, the elections were marred by numerous shortcomings, especially in the run-up to the vote. Among other things, they pointed to the undue influence on the country’s political life exercised by wealthy interest groups. This had adversely affected the electoral process. “Considering the abuse of power and the excessive role of money in this election,” the OSCE noted, “democratic progress appears to have reversed in Ukraine.” Germany is pressing for a full investigation of all irregularities surrounding the general elections there.
