Raw materials partnership established with Peru

14.07.2014 - Press release

Joint press release of the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy

In Berlin today (14 July) the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Peru, represented by the Peruvian Foreign Minister Gonzalo Gutiérrez Reinel, signed an executive agreement on cooperation in the area of raw materials, industry and technology.

Peru is one of the South American countries rich in raw materials, and mining is an important economic pillar. However, mining also creates considerable ecological and social problems.

Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement in this context:

Through the raw materials partnership we want to help Peru to deal with the challenges it faces. Respecting human rights, protecting the indigenous population and complying with environmental and social standards are key elements of the Agreement. At the same time the cooperation offers Germany chances for securing a sustainable raw materials supply.

Economic Affairs Minister Gabriel issued the following statement:

Peru is the third country to conclude a raw materials agreement with Germany. It provides the political framework for a regular dialogue on issues concerning raw materials.

The cooperation between enterprises and research institutions will tap potential which could benefit both parties. German companies, for example, could supply innovative solutions in the areas of environmental and water management, resource efficiency and for the re‑cultivation of decommissioned mines.

Peru is already playing a constructive role in efforts to improve international governance and transparency in the area of raw materials. The Agreement reinforces internationally recognised guiding principles for business and human rights, containing firmly anchored and binding measures to improve energy and resource efficiency and to develop the Peruvian raw materials sector in a socially and environmentally responsible manner

Peru is one of the leading producers of metallic raw materials such as silver and copper. Mining comprises around 15 per cent of the country’s economic output and generates more than half of its export revenue.
