In Albania large quantities of surplus munitions are to be destroyed. The modern saw blades needed to do the job safely and effectively are in short supply, however. The Federal Foreign Office is therefore helping Albania to purchase new saw blades to replace those that have worn out. more

Large quantities of out‑of‑date surplus ammunition are still in storage in Serbia. The storage conditions for napalm and white phosphorus often do not comply with the required standards, thus posing an environmental and security risk for Serbia and its neighbours. Serbia itself has neither the funding nor, to some extent, the technology to dispose of this highly toxic ammunition in a proper, environmentally safe way within a reasonable period. more

In the middle of Europe, large amounts of Soviet-era weapons and ammunition are still in storage. They are a security and environmental risk not only for Ukraine and its neighbours. Germany is participating in a NATO initiative to destroy these dangerous stockpiles. more

Libya: Securing weapons and destroying land mines, munitions and explosive remnants of war

Landmine stockpiles in Benghazi

Landmines and other remnants of war which were left behind by the Gaddafi regime pose an ongoing danger to the people of Libya. The National Transitional Council intends to join the Ottawa Convention banning anti personnel mines and destroy the country’s mine stockpiles. The Federal Foreign Office is supporting it in these efforts. more
