On 23 November Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle met his Moroccan counterpart, Saad-Eddine El Othmani, who was paying his first visit to Germany. Their talks focused on bilateral and international topics as well as Morocco’s reform policy.
Westerwelle stressed that Germany and Morocco enjoyed good bilateral relations. In October 2012 the first session of the German-Moroccan Joint Economic Commission took place in Berlin, creating a favourable environment for the further strengthening of ties between the two countries. Some 100 German businesses are active in Morocco. El Othmani thanked Germany for its support, for example in the sphere of vocational training, and said that this was very important. Westerwelle, in turn, welcomed the fact that Morocco had embarked on the path of domestic reform.
Both Foreign Ministers highlighted Morocco’s international engagement. Like Germany, Morocco currently holds a non‑permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. There the two countries worked together in a spirit of trust, Westerwelle stated. Morocco will assume the Council’s rotating Presidency in December. At the international level, Morocco and Germany are both committed to resolving the crisis in Mali. El Othmani stressed that his country supported the West African states who were acting as mediators in the conflict in order to create a united and stable government and to maintain Mali’s territorial integrity.
Morocco to host the next meeting of the Group of Friends of the Syrian People
Morocco is also working to find a way to end the conflict in Syria. Westerwelle thanked El Othmani for hosting the next meeting of the Group of Friends of the Syrian People in December. Morocco was playing an important role in this context, too, he said. According to Westerwelle this meeting was intended to send a clear message of support to the National Coalition, which had recently been established by Syrian opposition groups. El Othmani stressed the need to provide humanitarian assistance to the people inside and outside Syria who were suffering from the conflict.
