Human Rights Commissioner donates for Ai Weiwei

08.11.2011 - Press release

Markus Löning, Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy at the Federal Foreign Office, has made a donation to the fundraising campaign for Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. In Berlin today (8 November) he made the following comments in this connection:

“I am delighted about this fundraising campaign. People in China have found an extraordinary and creative way to criticize the authorities’ treatment of Ai Weiwei. The campaign also testifies to people’s desire for justice and their loathing of arbitrary acts. That I fully sympathize with! So I, too, have decided to make a symbolic contribution.
Ai Weiwei is admired all over the world for his creative genius as well as for his peaceful struggle for human rights and democracy. I call upon the Chinese authorities to ensure that he can once again exercise his right to free speech and movement.”

Prominent Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has been ordered by his country’s authorities to pay the equivalent of 1.7 million euro for alleged tax offences. His compatriots are donating money to help him raise this sum. The artist plans to repay his benefactors in due course.
