Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin today (15 October):

The Federal Foreign Office and an increasing number of German missions abroad send digital messages via social networks. International diplomacy is taking place to an ever greater degree in Web 2.0. I am looking forward to my first Twitter interview and to a digital exchange on German foreign policy.

Anyone can follow the interview live via the Federal Foreign Office’s Twitter channel @AuswaertigesAmt:

Present around the world via social networks

The Federal Foreign Office and the German missions abroad are present around the world via social networks. Currently, more than 90 German missions have a Facebook account, while around 40 missions and ambassadors are already using the microblogging site Twitter.

The number of users is rising steadily, which shows the considerable interest around the world in German foreign policy and in digital diplomacy from Germany. For example, the German-language Twitter channel @AuswaertigesAmt now has more than 200,000 followers. Several German embassies (including those in Cairo, Tunis and Dhaka) each have more than 100,000 fans on Facebook.
