Human Rights Commissioner Löning on the violent breaking up of demonstrations in Minsk

20.12.2010 - Press release

Markus Löning, the Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office, today (20 December) issued the following statement on the violent breaking up of demonstrations in Minsk:

“I am outraged that tens of thousands of people demonstrate for free and fair elections and are then set upon by the police with batons and stun grenades.
The fact that President Lukashenko has citizens and opposition candidates beaten up and that the police use violence to prevent journalists from reporting events is a clear illustration of the authoritarian attitude of the regime in Minsk.
I call upon the Belarusian authorities to release immediately all those who have been arrested and to start proceedings against those responsible for the violence.”
