- date of issue
Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle today (15 December)had a meeting at the Federal Foreign Office with Professor Gesine Schwan, the outgoing Coordinator of German-Polish Intersocietal and Cross-Border Cooperation.
During their talks the Minister paid tribute to Professor Schwan’s impressive and long-standing commitment to German-Polish relations. During her years as Coordinator she had been an important bridge-builder and played a key role in promoting mutual understanding and reconciliation between the two neighbours.
In this connection Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle has now appointed Minister of State Cornelia Pieper to the post of Coordinator with immediate effect. The appointment is intended to demonstrate that German-Polish relations are a matter within the immediate purview of the Federal Government and the Federal Foreign Minister.
Professor Schwan’s contract as Coordinator of German-Polish Intersocietal and Cross-Border Cooperation expired on 30 September 2009.
