The Coordinator of German-Polish Cooperation

Cornelia Pieper, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, is the Coordinator of German Polish Intersocietal and Cross Border Cooperation.

In 2004 the Governments of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Poland appointed Coordinators in order to further intensify the friendly and good-neighbourly relations between the two countries. On the Polish side the post is held by Wladyslaw Bartoszewski, State Secretary for Intercultural Dialogue in the Chancellery of the Polish Prime Minister.

In her role as Coordinator, Cornelia Pieper seeks to forge even closer societal and cultural ties between Germany and Poland, cultivate interpersonal dialogue and exchange at all levels and thereby contribute to the formation of a European consciousness.

Pieper issued the following statement on her highly personal relationship to Poland:

“I spent the year 1980 at the University of Warsaw. The Solidarity movement was emerging at this time, and I took part in their actions at the university. For me this was the first whiff of freedom. I wouldn’t be a politician today were it not for the experiences I had in Warsaw then. I owe this to Solidarity, which also initiated the process that led to German reunification.”
