Afghan President Karzai has announced his decision on the fifth and last tranche of the security handover. Foreign Minister Westerwelle said in Berlin that the start of the last phase of the security handover throughout Afghanistan was “a milestone”. He added that it was “an important step towards full Afghan sovereignty and ownership”. more

Great responsibility for Iran’s new President

Hassan Rohani, a cleric regarded as a moderate, won the presidential election in Iran after the first round of voting. Speaking in Berlin, Foreign Minister Westerwelle said Germany would be “watching closely whether changes in Iran following this election open up new opportunities both within the country and in its external relations”. more

Greater planning security for German schools abroad

German and foreign children learn side by side at German schools in more than 70 countries. A new law will grant these schools greater financial security for the future. more

Supporting the stabilization mission in Mali

The Federal Armed Forces are to participate in the United Nations’ stabilization mission in Mali. The Federal Cabinet took the relevant decision on 5 June, and the German Bundestag has now discussed the planned deployment. more

German Afghan Dialogue on Peace and Islam

At the invitation of the Federal Foreign Office, a high ranking delegation of the Afghan Ulema Council and representatives of the Afghan High Peace Council visited Berlin from 3 to 7 June. The motto of the visit was German Afghan dialogue on peace and Islam. more

Russia: Protect the rights of sexual minorities!

The Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament) has just passed a bill criminalizing the “propaganda of non traditional sexual relations to minors”. Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Markus Löning expressed concern and called on Russia’s Parliament and President to stop the law. more
