Foreign Minister Steinmeier on Germany’s candidacy for chairmanship of the OSCE in 2016
The German cabinet agreed on 1 October that Germany would apply for chairmanship of the OSCE in 2016. Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement on the candidacy in Berlin.
The OSCE has proved in the Ukraine crisis how important it is for a pan-European peace order.
It is in our own best interests to strengthen the OSCE as a forum for dialogue, as a bridge between East and West, as an operative instrument for European crisis prevention, and as an institution that plays a concrete active role.
The prerequisite for this is that the member states show commitment and take on responsibility. We are supporting this through our willingness to take over the chairmanship in 2016.
