Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the situation in Yemen

17.05.2015 - Press release

The ceasefire in Yemen is creating an urgently needed opportunity to finally provide the population with humanitarian assistance. In the past weeks we have made support available and will continue to do so.

Now the goal must be to ensure that the assistance actually reaches those who need it most and is not used for political ballgames. All parties need to comply with the mechanisms put in place by the United Nations for this purpose.

Yet they must also now seize the chance to finally create an opening for talks on finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The new UN special envoy Ould Cheikh Ahmed has arrived in Sana’a to conduct talks with the parties. Over the weekend the Gulf States are planning a conference on Yemen in Riyadh. I hope that it will be possible in an initial step to put the ceasefire on a permanent footing. We are doing what we can to support these efforts.
