At the Munich Security Conference, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle underlined the importance of disarmament in a globalized world.Disarmament would not happen overnight, but there was no reason to view it as impossible, said Westerwelle. In addition, he clearly stated that a nuclear-armed Iran was unacceptable. If there were to be a fresh approach to cooperation, Iran’s words would need to be supported by concrete action.

Ahead of the Munich Security Conference, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Berlin. The Ministers highlighted the strategic partnership between the two countries, as well as their common historical and cultural roots.

Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has again called on Iran to cooperate.He demanded transparency from Tehran and reiterated that the international community would not accept a nuclear-armed Iran.Because Iran has so far refused to cooperate, the international community will now discuss “further measures”.

Working towards a world free of nuclear weapons

Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle met elder statesmen from Germany and the US who are working to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons. Westerwelle expressed his support for the commitment of the eight disarmament veterans, who include Richard von Weizsäcker and Henry Kissinger. Ahead of the Munich Security Conference, they are coming together for the first time with like-minded politicians from other European countries.

Federal Foreign Office increases emergency humanitarian aid for Somalia

The Federal Foreign Office has made 1,000,000 euro available to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to enable it to provide emergency care for internally displaced persons in Somalia. The funds will be used to provide food, drinking water, medicine and emergency shelter for particularly affected groups of the population.

Germany in Kazakhstan 2010

Minister of State Cornelia Pieper officially launched the “Year of Germany in Kazakhstan 2010” programme in Astana. In her speech she emphasized that cultural relations could not be a one-way street, but should rather promote dialogue between cultures, and promised to encourage openness to Kazakh culture in Germany as well.

Germany supports Greek reform agenda

On his first visit to Greece as Federal Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle assured the Greek Government of German and European backing for its efforts to tackle the country’s difficult financial situation.The necessary reforms are also in Europe’s interest, he emphasized following talks with Greek Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou.
