Germany in Kazakhstan 2010

Provide insights into Germany in all its facets and build new bridges between people in both countries – that is the aim of the Year of Germany now being staged in Kazakhstan under Federal Foreign Office auspices.

The programme of “The Year of Germany in Kazakhstan 2010” features three areas of major importance to both countries: environment and climate, education and society.

  • Exhibitions and conferences will focus on climate protection and the sustainable use of resources.

  • Academic conferences will discuss developments in education.

  • Special events are planned to encourage interest in the German language as well as higher education and research in Germany.

  • The cultural programme will feature both classical and contemporary art forms, highlighting the importance of culture also in today’s Germany.

The Year of Germany in Kazakhstan 2010” is a joint initiative of President Horst Köhler of Germany and President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan. During President Köhler’s visit to Kazakhstan in September 2008 the two heads of state announced plans for a two-year programme to make both countries better known to the partner country through a series of events designed to run over twelve months. The programme began with the Year of Kazakhstan in Germany in 2009. In 2010 it is now Germany’s turn to present itself in Kazakhstan.

Inauguration by Minister of State Cornelia Pieper

Minister of State Pieper visited Kazakhstan from 1 to 4 February, in Astana she officially launched the Year of Germany on 3 February.

The first leg of her trip took Ms Pieper to Almaty, where she visited the German-Kazakh University on 1 February. On 2 and 3 February she had political talks in Astana.

Germany is Kazakhstan’s most important partner in the EU. In 2010 Kazakhstan assumed the chairmanship of the OSCE, the first Central Asian country to take on this role. In recent years we have significantly intensified our political contacts with Kazakhstan, an increasingly important player in Central Asia. A whole series of agreements, including a “partnership for the future”, an “innovation and investment partnership” and an intergovernmental agreement on support for the German-Kazakh University illustrate the intensity of the cooperation between both countries.
