Political relations

Though basically sound, German-Comorian relations are not extensive.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 2 February 1978. Since June 1979, the resident German ambassador in Antananarivo (Madagascar) has also been accredited to the Comorian capital Moroni. The Comorian ambassador in Paris is also accredited to Berlin. Political relations are positive and amicable. Expanding relations, especially cultural and economic cooperation, is one of the goals also pursued by the current Comorian government. Germany actively supports national reconciliation under the Moroni Agreement of 20 December 2003.

Economic relations

In 2009, Comorian exports to Germany (almost exclusively agricultural produce) were worth approximately EUR 0.57 million (2008: approximately EUR 0.98 million). Imports from Germany (mainly machinery) declined again in 2009 and were worth approximately EUR 0.9 million (2008: approximately EUR 2.2 million).

A total of approximately EUR 210 million has so far been made available for Technical and Financial Cooperation with the Comoros (in particular for the health care sector, agriculture, electrification and broadcasting services). The most recent development measure was structural aid provided in 1992 (EUR 1.02 million), after which bilateral development cooperation was terminated.

Cultural relations

In the past, cultural relations have been limited to a few cultural aid projects as well as scholarship programmes provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and further training courses offered by InWEnt – Capacity Building International, Germany.
