Relations with the Federal Republic of Germany are trouble-free and amicable, not least owing to Germany's considerable development policy commitment in the past. From 1976 to 1994, Germany provided some EUR 52 million in Financial Cooperation, some EUR 46 million in Technical Cooperation and approx. EUR 20 million in other commitments.

Gambia has received no further bilateral development aid since 1995. The last project was the German-Gambian Forestry Project, concluded in early 2006. Development cooperation is coordinated instead mainly by the EU.

In political relations, Germany is an advocate of substantial European-Gambian dialogue, expressly including sensitive issues such as the respect of human rights as well as freedom of the press and the consolidation of democratic institutions and the rule of law.
