Country flag Belize

Last updated in February 2010

The Federal Republic of Germany staunchly supported Belize's right to self-determination in the United Nations (UN) and recognized it as an independent state on 21 September 1981, the first state to do so after the United Kingdom. The establishment of diplomatic relations followed in 1982. Bilateral relations are amicable and untroubled. Belize frequently supports German interests in the UN.

An approximately 30,000-strong group of Mennonites of German origin, who immigrated from Mexico and Canada, are often looked upon as German although they are not German citizens. They deliberately keep a low profile in public but are very successful in agriculture and in the artisanal trades (e.g. the manufacture of furniture).
