Federal Foreign Office pledges 500,000 euro in humanitarian assistance for Yemen

27.01.2010

The Federal Foreign Office has allocated an additional 500,000 euro for relief measures for suffering civilians in Yemen. The funds will be made available to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to enable it to provide emergency aid for internally displaced persons in the Sa’ada region in the northern part of the country.

The fighting between government forces and opposition rebel groups continues in northern Yemen. According to the United Nations, currently far more than 150,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.

The aid measures supported by the Federal Foreign Office include the provision of food and water as well as medical care. In addition, the ICRC is working to reconnect families and to obtain information about missing persons.

In 2009 the Federal Foreign Office made one million euro available for projects in the crisis region.
