Federal Foreign Office and aid organizations coordinate humanitarian aid for Haiti
19.01.2010
The Federal Government is coordinating its humanitarian aid for Haiti closely with aid organizations. At the special meeting of the Humanitarian Aid Coordinating Committee on the situation in Haiti held today (19 January), the participants talked about the main needs and discussed priorities for further engagement.
Günter Nooke, Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid, attended the meeting and issued the following statement today (19 January):
“Even before the earthquake, the humanitarian situation in Haiti was extremely difficult. Now it is a matter of giving the people all the help they need after the disaster. But at the same time we must try to lay the foundations for functioning infrastructure and make a contribution to sustainable development all across the country.”
The participants agreed that, alongside water supplies, further efforts were needed quickly in the areas of healthcare and emergency accommodation.
To better reach the people living outside the capital Port-au-Prince, aid is to be stepped up in other regions, for example in Leogane and Jacmel.
At the next special meeting on 17 February, aid efforts will be further coordinated and attention will turn to the questions of transitional assistance, prevention and disaster reduction.
