Respect for and development of human rights are a key priority for the German Government. Germany's human rights policy in international relations has a concrete obligation: to protect individuals from violations of their rights and basic freedoms and to create a viable framework to ensure that suppression, the arbitrary use of power and exploitation no longer have a chance to flourish.

The Federal Government is committed to the global protection of human rights. The new Human Rights Report of the Federal Government gives specific examples of its efforts over the last three years, and was adopted by the Cabinet on 16 July.

German foreign policy seeks to improve the human rights situation in countries where there is cause for concern. Civil society is regularly consulted in order to obtain its views on the present and future of German human rights policy.

Article 1 paragraph 3 of the Charter of the United Nations commits to "... promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion".
