Civilian crisis prevention, conflict resolution and post-conflict peace-building

With the ending of the East-West standoff and in the course of ongoing global networking of the most diverse areas of life, the number of wars between nations has indeed fallen, but distribution conflicts have risen. The international community, and Germany as part of this commonwealth, must meet these challenges with coherent strategies.

National structures

The Interministerial Civilian Crisis Prevention Steering Group brings together and coordinates Federal Government initiatives in the field of crisis prevention. The Advisory Board for Civilian Crisis Prevention ensures the involvement of non-governmental players in civilian crisis prevention. The Centre for International Peace Operations (ZIF) is the implementing organization for international peace missions and election monitoring operations.

Fostering democracy-building and the rule of law

The Federal Foreign Office has since 2001 been promoting projects to support international measures in the areas of crisis prevention, peacekeeping and conflict management. Support has been given to projects and initiatives of international organizations, as well as to German and international NGOs.

International players in the field of crisis prevention

Not only the United Nations and the OSCE, but also the European Union, the Council of Europe, the G 8 and NATO are engaged in conflict prevention.
