International nuclear policy
The International Atomic Energy Agency was established to expand the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world and to prevent the assistance it provides being used to further any military purpose. EU coordination on nuclear and non-proliferation matters happens at working level in Brussels.
The aim of nuclear fusion is to use a steadily burning plasma in fusion power plants as an option to provide a commercial source of energy by the middle of this century. ITER has become a truly international project, involving all major industrialized countries. Given the transboundary risks associated with the use of nuclear energy, there is a need for special arrangements on liability for nuclear damage.
