The transatlantic partnership - important pillar of German foreign policy

Alongside European integration, the transatlantic partnership is the most important pillar of German foreign policy. The United States is Germany’s closest ally outside Europe.

The EU and the US enjoy close ties. At government level regular consultations take place. At societal level contact and dialogue are promoted by a wide range of individuals, groups and associations. The US and the EU are also the two most closely linked economic regions in the world.

Partners in energy security and climate protection

Global environmental, climate and energy security issues can only be resolved if we act together. The Obama Administration in the USA recognizes that climate change is a global challenge. In that fight, transatlantic cooperation can demonstrate its ability to help shape the world’s future.

Close cultural and societal links

Germany and the United States are linked in a host of different ways.The many societal and cultural contacts between both countries give these links an important human dimension. There is a long tradition of exchange programmes for pupils, researchers and sportsmen and sportswomen.
