Russia - strategic partner for Germany and the EU 

Germany and Russia share a centuries-old and often painful history. Today it is a strategic partnership that brings them together. In important questions of international policy – among them energy security, disarmament and international trouble spots such as Afghanistan, Iran and the Middle East – each is dependent on the other.

Economic and Energy Cooperation

Germany is Russia’s most important economic partner. Energy plays a special role in the economic cooperation between the two countries: Russia is Germany’s leading energy supplier. At the same time, Germany has much to offer Russia in the field of energy efficiency.

The EU and Russia

Russia is one of the EU's major partners, and relations between the two are broad-based. Work is currently in progress on a new Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.

Cultural and civil society cooperation

Cultural cooperation provides an impressive reflection of the eventful history shared by the two countries. There is a tradition of cultural exchange through the centuries. Through cultural encounters and the work performed by cultural institutions, the German Government is working to keep alive memories of this legacy. With this as a foundation, relations are to be further expanded, not least through an insight into contemporary developments in various cultural spheres.
