Iraq
Germany is assisting Iraq with its reconstruction and democratization agenda as well as its efforts to improve the economic situation of ordinary Iraqis. The main focus of our activities is training and the development of democratic institutions. A number of projects are designed to promote the development – despite the difficult environment – of economic and trade links between Iraq and Germany.

In recent years stabilization and reconstruction activities in Iraq have been funded also by the European Union, with Germany contributing an approx. 20% share.

Germany is supporting Iraq in its efforts to promote reconstruction in the cultural field and to preserve its cultural heritage. The Federal Government significantly increased its engagement last year. During Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier's visit to Baghdad and Erbil in the middle of February, further-reaching measures in the cultural sphere were agreed with the Iraqi Government.
