Aktion Afrika – cultural dialogue among equal partners

Germany is stepping up its cultural relations and education policy engagement in Africa. In 2008 alone, the Federal Foreign Office made available 20 million euro for cultural exchange projects and programmes on our neighbouring continent. And Germany is continuing its engagement in 2009. It is clear that effective promotion of culture and education also enhances the continent's economic performance.

„Rien ne sert de courir“ -  “Slow and steady wins the race” An exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of Benin’s independence

Several exhibitions will be held in June 2010 to mark the 50th anniversary of Benin’s independence. Artists who have developed very distinctive concepts and strategies and have held their own on the art market away from the mainstream will be invited to participate in the exhibition “Rien ne sert de courir”, whose title is borrowed from a fable by de la Fontaine. It is set to open on 8 June.

AFRICAN MOSAÏQUE - A pan-African fashion show

The last few years have seen the development of an avant-garde fashion scene in Africa that now inspires and excites the international fashion community. The new generation of African designers have settled in Paris, London and New York, as well as in Antananarivo, Marrakech, Dakar and Johannesburg. The German premiere of this pan-African fashion show featuring the continent’s best designers will be presented by Anna Getaneh on 9 June at the Federal Foreign Office.

Aktion Afrika: “Who Knows Tomorrow” exhibition

Who knows tomorrow – this saying, common all across Africa, is the title of a special project hosted by the National Gallery. Five internationally renowned artists, whose work is characterized by their African backgrounds, will be featured in an exhibition in Berlin from 4 June to 26 September

Focus on South Africa at Africa Festival in Würzburg

Africa's top musical talent will grace stages in Würzburg from May 21-24 as part of the acclaimed Africa Festival. In addition to music, there are a variety of activities organized to offer audiences a multi-dimensional perspective of this diverse and fascinating continent. This is the 22nd time the festival is being held and its country focus for 2010 is South Africa, host to the upcoming World Cup.

Zimbabwe Arts Festival in Berlin from 3 - 5 June

Zimbabwe?A ruined economy, starving people, AIDS and cholera ... That’s the image of Zimbabwe that dominates our media. In the middle of Harare’s avenues, however, can be found a Zimbabwe more or less entirely unknown . In the Bookcafé, artists organize poetry slams and literary or social debates, present new bands and showcase young talent. The Zimbabwe Arts Festival in Berlin provides a stage for these artists.

Johannesburg Special – Films from South Africa

The Filmmuseum Potsdam is devoting over a week (27 May - 2 June) to South African films made in Johannesburg and taking Johannesburg as their subject material. At the time of the screenings the final round of the FIFA World Cup will be about to commence in South Africa – the first African country to host the event. Many games will take place in Johannesburg – for example the opening match and the final in the Soccer City Stadium. As South Africa’s largest city, how is Johannesburg handling the World Cup and other future challenges? It’s worth looking at the mega city and its development over the decades through the eyes of South African cinema
