Germany and the international community are helping Afghanistan to become a stable country whose people can live in safety and determine their own future. Europe is increasingly recognizing the strategic importance of Central Asia. The region is also important because of its neighbourhood to Afghanistan. Peace in Afghanistan will not possible without stability in Central Asia.

Afghanistan must not revert to its former role as a refuge for international terrorists. This is why Germany and the international community are helping Afghanistan to become a stable country whose people can live in safety and determine their own future.

Cooperation with the countries of Central Asia

The countries of Central Asia are growing more and more significant for Germany's and indeed the EU's energy security, and they increasingly play a role in the development of a transcontinental transport infrastructure linking Europe, Russia and Asia.  The Federal Government used the German EU Presidency to provide impetus for more intensive cooperation between the European Union and Central Asia. A strategy for future collaboration was officially adopted by the European Council in the first half of 2007.

Central Asia: Words must be backed up by action

Germany and the EU are ready to help the Central Asian countries improve the region’s water management. Minister of State Gernot Erler underlined this during the second EU-Central Asia conference at ministerial level in Brussels. In 2008 Germany, already recognizing the problem, started the Central Asia Water Initiative.
