Partner school in Chile: Rudolf Deckwerth School

Franz Beckenbauer Beckenbauer in Puente Alto (Walter Krumbach)

Franz Beckenbauer unveiled the PASCH plaque at the Rudolf Deckwerth School in Santiago de Chile on 18 November 2008. The German Ambassador, the representative of the Goethe-Institut and the head teacher signed the Partner School contract at a ceremony.

The "Schools: Partners for the Future" initiative launched by Federal Minister Steinmeier is intended to awaken and heighten interest in Germany and its society as well as in the German language in at least 1,000 partner schools abroad. Thanks to the partner schools in this network it will be much easier for young people to gain the German Language Diploma abroad. The broad range of opportunities to learn German as a foreign language will foster long-term ties with Germany.

Rudolf Deckwerth School

Rudolf Deckwerth School is situated in Puente Alto, in the south-east of Santiago de Chile. The School was founded on 28 October 1994 (originally under the name Villa Deckwerth) by Helvi Deckwerth, the daughter of the ethnic German after whom the school was named.

The School has set itself the goal of bringing together Chilean and German culture under the motto "Building the future while respecting traditions". German was therefore made an obligatory subject within the school's curriculum. Previously, German was taught two hours a week. After joining PASCH, the school will increase German lessons to four a week. The school is looking for another German teacher.

Since its foundation, the number of students has increased steadily from 100 to the some 500 at present. In order to better foster students, the maximum class size is 30. Once the development period had been completed, the first students graduated in 2006. Three quarters of the graduates are now studying at university. The school employs 25 teachers.
