The German Archaeological Institute (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut – DAI) is a federal agency affiliated to the Federal Foreign Office with the right to academic autonomy. The Institute is the successor organization to the Institute for Archaeological Correspondence founded in Rome in 1829. Since 1832 it has been based in Berlin.

The staff of the German Archaeological Institute carry out research in the field of archaeology and related disciplines: excavations, expeditions and other projects, mainly abroad but also in Germany. The Institute has relations with the international research community – many important academics from all over the world are members – and fosters young academics.

Within the framework of the Research and Academic Relations Initiative (2009), the DAI will establish centres of excellence in teaching and research, such as its departments abroad in Sana'a and Beijing. Furthermore, it will award scholarships for periods of study and research in Germany, provide training for specialists from guest and partner countries, both locally and in Germany, and set up alumni circles at the DAI departments abroad.
