Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation sponsors research stays in Germany for highly qualified foreign academics. Its sponsorship is mainly in the form of Humboldt research fellowships for junior researchers from abroad but it also grants Humboldt research awards to internationally recognized researchers.
Since its refounding in 1953 the Foundation has built up a wordwide network of over 23,000 alumni, including 40 Nobel Prize laureates, in over 130 countries. Keeping in touch with them all is something the Foundation takes very seriously, for its philosophy is "once a Humboldtian, always a Humboldtian". As members of the Humboldt family they are also valuable potential partners for German academics and institutions.
In the context of the Research and Academic Relations Initiative 2009, the Humboldt Foundation plans to extend its network of so-called ambassador scientists abroad, establish a similar network in Germany itself and also make its research fellowships more attractive to researchers around the world.
