Germany is the third largest contributor to the United Nations, host country of a number of United Nations bodies and institutions as well as a potential candidate for a seat in the United Nations Security Council.

Reforming the United Nations Security Council

UN Security Council reform remains a key concern for the German Government. A reform of the United Nations that fails to adapt the Council to the geopolitical realities of the 21st century would be incomplete. As long as important regions and contributors to the UN system are not adequately represented, the Security Council runs the risk of losing legitimacy and authority.

64th General Assembly of the United Nations

The 64th session of the General Assembly started on 15 September. The Libyan Ali Treki was elected President. His priorities are: climate change, combating poverty, the financial and economic crisis, reform of the United Nations, and at regional level, the Middle East and Africa.
