The reform of the United Nations Security Council remains a major concern of the German Government. Any reform of the United Nations which did not involve adapting the Council to the geopolitical realities of the 21st century would be incomplete.

German contributions to United Nations peace missions

Germany plays a major and active role both in conflict prevention efforts and international peace missions, contributing peacekeepers, police officers, civilian experts, funding and equipment.

UN Campus, Bonn (former parliamentary building "Langer Eugen")

United Nations Day in Bonn

The then UN Secretary-General Annan and Chancellor Merkel opened the UN Campus in Bonn on 11 July 2006. Since the laying of the foundation stone in 1996, 17 of the total of 24 United Nations agencies based in Germany have now set up their headquarters in the UN City of Bonn.

Arid zone in Africa

Combating desertification effectively

Desertification is one of the biggest environmental and developmental problems of the 21st century. The 8th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is being held in Madrid from 3 to 14 September 2007. Within the United Nations framework Germany is particularly committed to preventing the further spread of arid zones.
